I’ve heard the case made that Burt is actually more magical than Mary. I’ve seen scenes from the movie recut to seem like a horror film. And I’ve heard the objections to the film by the writer of the original book. But none of these have diminished the magic of “Mary Poppins,” Disney’s 1964 classic that has the guts and beauty to take its time (imagine a two-plus-hour children’s film today). It’s got charming animation, great songs, Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, a pair of terrific kid performances, and a wonderful supporting cast.
