A slump in business travel has left the Greenwood Municipal Airport unable to attract the additional jet traffic it needs to have a chance at federal money for an expansion project.
Greenwood aviation board president Jeff Colvin told the Daily Journal of Franklin that the airport is on pace for about 400 jet takeoffs and landings this year, about the same as 2009. He says it needs a longer runway but can't expand at its location surrounded by homes and business just west of Interstate 65.
Mayor Charles Henderson hopes the airport can eventually be moved to a rural area east of I-65 to free the current site for development.
