Ball State University next month will launch what’s believed to be the nation’s first-ever digital sports production major.
Digital production has been taught for years through the journalism/telecommunications program. But the new offering involves a partnership with the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science.
That will include curriculum in the area of sports administration, such as revenue-generation and event management.
More and more sports networks are looking for employees with expertise not only in television but in sports delivery over Internet-based emerging media channels. Ball State has been working with several networks, including Turner Sports, to develop relevant coursework.
“There’s an insatiable appetite for sports content,” Chris Taylor, an instructor of telecommunications at Ball State, told IBJ.
The goal is to identify 16 freshmen each fall—in part because you can fit only so many students in a TV production truck. Taylor expects the program to be highly competitive.
Ball State’s telecommunications program has built a reputation for sports programming, particularly through its Sports Link program that provides student-generated programming for several networks.
Some of that includes online mobile and tablet-based programming produced in a partnership with Turner Sports for the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball tournament.
Ball State recently won the Best in College Sports Media Award at the College Sports Summit, a national competition.
