United Way of Central Indiana awarded $300,000 in Morgan County for the repair of roads and bridges damaged in the floods of 2008.

The city of Martinsville, Morgan County and town of Paragon received the grants, a last-resort source of funding. The communities had sought various sources of government grants but were found ineligible, according to UWCI.

The grant came from a $45 million pool created by Lilly Endowment Inc. in 2008. Many of the projects have already been completed and paid for by local governments, so the grant money will free up their budgets, said Mary Jones, senior planner at UWCI.

One project that is not complete is the various road repairs in Paragon, a town of about 660 people. Jones said the town ran out of cash, but now will be able to contract with the county for repairs.

Morgan County has received $1.7 million from Lilly Endowment for flood recovery. Earlier grants went to emergency assistance and support groups that formed in the wake of the disastrous summer floods.
