Indiana's commerce agency and Purdue University are opening an outreach office in California's Silicon Valley.

Officials say the West Coast Partnership Center will focus on attracting California companies to move to Indiana and to sell venture capitalists on ideas and research generated by Purdue faculty and entrepreneurs.

Indiana commerce secretary Mitch Roob told the Journal & Courier of Lafayette that the partnership is good fit to generate business opportunities in the state.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. is providing $500,000 for the office, which will open Oct. 29 at NASA's Ames Reserach Center in the city of Mountain View, near San Jose. The agency also has offices in Europe, Asia and Australia.

Purdue Research Foundation also supporting the office, said John C. Boyle, a Purdue alumnus who will lead  the effort. He will be the lone employee of the office for at least a few months.

"Hopefully withint a relatively short amount of time we'll see a real financial return for the university and the state," said Boyle, who has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Purdue and an MBA from Stanford University.

More than 18,000 Purdue alumni live in California, the university said in a news release.
