The University of Indianapolis announced on Friday that is has established a scholarship program that will award $10,000 per school year to each of 10 incoming students.

Students who attend the annual Richard G. Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders are eligible for the gift. The symposium, which will be held this year on Dec. 11, attracts about 400 high school juniors throughout Indiana to the university to learn about public issues. Lugar, Indiana’s senior U.S. senator, delivers the keynote speech.

The 10 students awarded the scholarship will receive $10,000 per year, for up to four consecutive years of undergraduate education.

The scholarships will support the mission of the university’s Richard G. Lugar Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders, which coordinates the annual symposium and other leadership-related events and programs. Scholarship recipients will be expected to undertake leadership roles on campus that might benefit them in their career choices.

Students must apply for the scholarships by Jan. 15 of their senior year in high school. A committee will evaluate applicants primarily on academic criteria.

Recipients are eligible for annual renewal if they remain in good social standing and maintain a full-time course load, as well as a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 as university undergraduates.

The annual symposium was founded in 1977 by Lugar, a former university trustee and instructor.
