The owner of a South Bend printing facility has decided to shut it down this summer and eliminate about 100 jobs.
The decision by Chicago-based R.R. Donnelley & Sons comes about six months after it acquired the facility in its purchase of Bowne & Co.
Company officials say they chose to close the South Bend plant because changing customer demands have created excess capacity in its printing business.
St. Joseph County chamber of commerce president Jeff Rea told the South Bend Tribune he was surprised by the announcement. He said he believes the company decided to consolidate operations with other facilities it has in the Midwest.
