A California-based pharmaceutical company says it expects to hire 234 people by 2016 at a new operation on the site of a former Pfizer Inc. drug plant near Terre Haute.

NantWorks LLC plans to invest $85.5 million to redevelop the facility on about 210 acres on the south side of Terre Haute. The manufacturing plant, which is expected to be operational in 2015, will produce critical care injectable and oncological drugs.

Pfizer employed more than 800 workers at the site before closing in 2008.

NantWorks officials say scientists, chemists and engineers employed by the plant will earn an average annual salary of about $51,000.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered NantWorks, LLC up to $2,000,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $100,000 in training grants based on the company's job-creation plans. The tax credits are performance-based, meaning the company can't claim incentives if it doesn't meet hiring goals.

Vigo County will consider additional property-tax abatement at the request of the Terre Haute Economic Development Corp.
