The former chancellor of Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne says in a federal lawsuit that the trustees of Purdue University forced him into retirement because of his gender.

Michael Wartell was forced out at IPFW in 2011 under a Purdue policy that requires university executives to retire at age 65.

Wartell's complaint, filed Monday, says Purdue denied his request to remain chancellor, even though such requests by other chancellors had been honored in the past.

The Journal & Courier of Lafayette reports the suit alleges former Purdue President France Cordova wished to hire more female administrators before her tenure ended in 2012. Wartell was replaced with a 64-year-old woman.

Purdue spokesman Chris Sigurdson declined to comment Tuesday on the filing. Cordova couldn't be reached for comment.
