Franklin City HallFranklin officials are soliciting bids to purchase and renovate the “Old City Hall” building in the downtown area of the city south of Indianapolis. The starting offer is $212,500. The building, at 55 W. Madison St., is a former U.S. Post Office. Built in 1936 and designed by architect Louis A. Simon in the Georgian Revival style, it mostly recently was used by the city to house administrative offices. The ground floor and lower level total 8,900 square feet. The city’s redevelopment commission’s goals for the property include renovating the interior as well as “historically appropriate” improvements to the façade. City officials say they will select the highest and best offer, but reserve the right to reject any or all bids. They previously tried to sell the building in 2010 but scrapped the plans after rejecting several offers from developers. One city councilor proposed renting space in the building to not-for-profits, but that plan never gained traction. Proposals will be accepted beginning May 16 and can be sent to Krista Linke, director of planning and economic development, city of Franklin, 70 E. Monroe St., Franklin, Ind., 46131. Tours of the property can be scheduled by contacting Linke at 736-3631.
