Art & Soul

The Arts Council of Indianapolis’ annual month-long celebration of African American art and artists kicks off with a celebration on Jan. 28 with Griot Drum Ensemble, Krash Krew Dance and a chance to meet this year’s featured artists. Then it’s music and dance throughout the month including Everett Greene singing jazz standards on Feb. 9, Kenyetta Dance Company on Feb. 18, Brenda Williams in a tribute to Mahalia Jackson Feb. 22, and, on Feb. 24, an “immersive, site-specific living art installation” by Devon Ginn.  Jan. 28-Feb. 25 Artsgarden Details

“The Firebird”

Philadelphia-based Enchantment Theatre Company mixes masks, show play and puppetry to bring visual life to Stravinsky’s music for this family concert with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.  Jan. 29 Hilbert Circle Theatre Details

“It Shoulda Been You”

A meddling mother, a stained dress and an ex-boyfriend are just some of the obstacles in this wedding day musical getting its local premiere via Actors Theatre of Indiana. Jan. 27-Feb. 12 Studio Theatre Details

Joel Smirnoff

Yes, the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis—as its name suggests—puts on a major string battle. But it also offers concerts, including an annual cabaret-style evening. This one highlights former IVCI jurist Joel Smirnoff, who, for a time, was a fourth of the Julliard String Quartet. Jan. 24 Indiana Landmarks Center Details
