Friday fun: Dog Day Afternoon

August 23, 2013

Summer may be drawing to a close, but the Humane Society for Hamilton County is planning one more Dog Day Afternoon.

The not-for-profit animal shelter’s summer fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater in Fishers. The “Parade of Paws” dog walk starts at 1:30 p.m., and the “Woofstock” entertainment stage opens at 2.

More than 100 vendors and exhibitors are expected be on hand, along with activities for kids and canines alike. The event wraps up at 7 p.m.

Admission is $5 per person. Dogs and children younger than 10 get in for free.

Proceeds benefit the shelter in Noblesville, which relies on donations to fund most of its $1.5 million annual budget. The organization receives less than a third of its revenue from government contracts.

The county-owned building it occupies is at capacity—and then some. As many as 200 volunteers open their homes to foster animals that are ill or need extra attention.

Its no-kill philosophy means the Humane Society treats sick and injured animals, often at considerable expense. Events like Dog Day Afternoon help to raise awareness along with money.

“To be a no-kill shelter requires collaboration with the entire community,” said Executive Director Rebecca Stevens. “We can want to save the lives of every animal all day long, but if we are not seeing people come in to adopt, foster or donate … it simply isn't possible.”

The Hamilton County organization is not affiliated with the better-known Humane Society of Indianapolis or any national animal welfare groups, making it more important (and difficult) for Stevens and her team to spread the word about the work they do.

“We do what’s best for the animal,” she said. “Then we have to figure out how to pay for it.”
