Franklin College launches $85 million building campaign

Franklin College has launched a 15-year, $85 million building campaign that could significantly alter the look of its campus.

The 1,000-student liberal arts college in Johnson County hopes to raise the money from private sources in a campaign dubbed “The Future Unfolds.”

The funds will pay for a new indoor athletic fieldhouse, a new residence hall and two new fraternity houses. The new living quarters would replace older facilities. The college also plans to add on to and renovate the classrooms in its Barnes Science Hall.

Renovations are already under way at Franklin’s football and track facility, and at its art center. Later in the building program, Franklin wants to renovate its Hamilton Library and its fitness center.

The building projects are part of a new strategic plan approved recently by Franklin’s board of directors.

“We’ve spent a great deal of time looking at how we can best strengthen the ways we prepare men and women for meaningful, creative, ongoing, changing careers,” Franklin President Jay Moseley said in a statement. “This strategic plan is the culmination of what we believe will enhance student learning and services, as well as ensure steady enrollment and financial stability.”

To help with the latter, Franklin’s board also hiked tuition by 5.95 percent for the 2010-11 academic year. The college pledged to keep giving scholarships to 95 percent of its students.

  • College is a business
The reason for the athletics being listed first is generally the athletics programs will pay for some of the academic programs at colleges. Athletics is a revenue for the college while academics is an expense. Not saying that is right, but that is the way it is. The college is still a business and has to be operated as such.
  • Misplaced priorities at Franklin
How sad that the press releases (from which the reporting presumably was taken) focuses first on sports facilities and class rooms last. Really shows where the priority is.

    2. I went this evening and the great thing about the zipline is each rider is a performer. Those that hang upside down the entire ride get huge cheers. And the sound of the ride is way cool. Multiple riders all doing acrobatic stunts is spectacular. It should be called the Warhol ride. Add in the ability to score via phones and you have the Olympics. (the zoo ought to do one of these over the river)

    3. Actually, completely bypassing Bloomington isn't a bad idea - since I-69 is going to need an offset to get around Martinsville, anyway, just start earlier. No Exit for SR 46, though. None whatsoever. And downgrade SR 37 south of Martinsville to secondary status... and just listen to the howls from all the IU fans and alumni when their (weekly) pilgrimages take twice as long. Well, OK, an exit at Gosport... SR 39 north of Martinsville (not south), Gosport (US231), Bloomfield, Loogootee, Jasper....

    4. Yup, the best Congress money can buy.

    5. Pink cadillac gotta be the one
