Library cuts 37 employees in effort to reduce deficit

The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library said Thursday morning it has cut 37 employees as part of its efforts to reduce an estimated $4 million revenue shortfall next year.

Management, support and public service staff were included in the cuts, the library said.

“The value of all library employees in providing the services our patrons desire cannot be overstated,” Library CEO Laura Bramble said in a written statement. “However, the reality of today’s economic climate requires the library to provide a leaner and more efficient model of service, one that we will continue to shape in the future.”

The announcement said Bramble and library board President Thomas Shevlot would not comment further on the cuts.

On Oct. 3, the library system reduced branch hours by a collective 26 percent. The decline in hours is expected to save about $1.5 million and keep all branches open in 2011.

All locations are open Monday through Thursday, except the downtown Central Library, which is closed on Thursdays.

Branches are closed either on Fridays or Saturdays, with a majority open on Saturdays.

The library system attributes its revenue shortfall to property tax caps and lower-than-anticipated property tax collections. It expects to achieve more savings from a $1 million reduction in the library’s books and materials budget, as well as cuts in printing, postage, utilities and data-communications costs.

Also, higher fines for failing to pick up held books and for replacing library cards could result in a modest revenue bump, the library said.

    Well the election has spoken and Libraries is one of those discretionary spending that the GOP has vowed to eliminate. Well I am sure Ballard and Mitch will find some foreign company to purchase the building and then offer the services for an annual fee -- that is after we give all our assets away. Seems that the library should open up at 1 PM and and stay open in the evening for those who work during the days and for the kids to use for their homework--but that is too simple. Just close the building down all together.

    I agree with your observations completely. Finding a time to pick up my holds was always tricky and now is even worse. Plus, I know get fined even if I cancel my hold (something I often had to resort to when I couldn't make it in).
  • Interesting....
    It is interesting to me that the library is increasing the fines for not picking up holds yet the branches (where one would pick up a hold)hours are greatly reduced giving patrons fewer opportunities to pick up those holds. I understand the need to increase revenue but truly the revenue generated from library fines is nothing compared to their overall budget. I am a loyal library patron but question some of the decisions the library and the library board have made.

Downtown Carmel or Keystone at the Crossing in Indy. It doesn't matter. All require you to get in your car to get just about anywhere you need to go. I'm in one of the Carmel apartments now where after just 2.5 short years one of the kitchen cabinet doors is crooked and lawn and property maintenance seems to be lacking my old Indianapolis apartment which cost $300 less. This is one of the new star apartments. As they keep building throughout the area "deals" will start popping up creating shoppers. If your property is falling apart after year 3 what will it look like after year 5 or 10??? Why would one stay here if they could move to a new Broad Ripple in 2 to 3 years or another part of the Far Northside?? The complexes aren't going to let the "poor" move in without local permission so that's not that problem, but it the occupancy rate drops suddenly because the "Young" people moved back to Indy then look out.

    5. Why are you so concerned about Ace hardware? I don't understand why anyone goes there! Every time ive gone in the past, they don't have what I need and I end up going to the big box stores. I understand the service aspect and that they try to be helpful but if they are going to survive I think they might need to carry more specialty parts.
