Pearson Education Ltd. plans to close a 1.2-million-square-foot book-distribution center in Lebanon next year, costing about 160 workers their jobs.

Pearson, the education-publishing subsidiary of London-based Pearson PLC, notified the state Friday that the closure would take place beginning in February and be completed by the end of the year.

The massive warehouse, at 135 S. Mount Zion Road, opened in 2001. Some of the distribution work will be transferred to Cranbury, N.J., and to a distribution center at 5550 W. 74th St. in Indianapolis.

Pearson did not say how many workers could be rehired in Indianapolis.

"As result of the consolidation, some new opportunities at our Indiana North warehouse will be created, and a fair process is in place for employees at each facility to be considered for these opportunities," Pearson said in a prepared statement. "These decisions are never easy and we deeply regret that we will be saying goodbye to some loyal and dedicated friends and colleagues."

Pearson has enjoyed recent growth in digital publications, but has seen a decline in the traditional textbook-publishing business.

“The closing in Lebanon anticipates the current and projected impact of the shift to digital and the resulting reduction of our reliance on paper-based warehouse space,” the company said.

Pearson's media brands include Prentice Hall, Addison–Wesley, eCollege, Penguin Readers and Financial Times Press.
