WorkOne offices prepare for in-person meetings

A new Indiana law that requires people receiving unemployment benefits to show proof in person that they have been trying to find work is creating some uncertainty for the state's workforce development offices.

Greg Richmond, office manager for a WorkOne office in Anderson, said he's concerned about the number of people who might be coming through the office because of the law that took effect Oct. 1.

"Based on the month of July, a year ago, we would have seen 160 people. If we get that kind of response, it is going to be a lot of traffic," Richmond told The Herald Bulletin.

The new law is modeled after a federal measure and requires unemployed residents to attend an in-person meeting or risk losing their jobless benefits. The law is aimed in part at reducing unemployment fraud.

The state's Department of Workforce Development has begun notifying those who've received at least four weeks' worth of jobless benefits that they need to schedule a meeting at a local WorkOne office. The meetings begin Wednesday.

Joe Frank, spokesman for the Department of Workforce Development, said those visiting the WorkOne centers can have their resumes reviewed and get tips on interview techniques.

"You will have to show you have searched for three jobs," he said. "We are really going to dig into their work search and see if we can give them some pointers."

The in-person review of work searches is only required once and will help cut down on fraud, Frank said.

"If we see they are not doing a bona fide work search, then we can cut them off," Frank said.

    Sorry IBJ, the article lacks depth. People receiving unemployment compensation are required to apply for employment a minimum of three times each week. The person filing for unemployment compensation must show proof that he/she applied for employment the previous week, provide the name of the company and a contact phone number at that specific company. I believe the one-on-one meetings are required once a person has received four weeks of unemployment compensation. I continue to wonder if employers that place job openings on the web are serious regarding the job openings they post. For example, St. Vincent Hospital and IU Health advertised numerous positions on the internet knowing full-well that 900+ employees were to be released by both healthcare providers. I question if WorkOne has the capacity to interview applicants, verify potential employer job offerings, and maintain internal records on each person applying for unemployment. Frankly, I would rather see funding applied toward the attraction of new jobs into Indiana, rather than herding applicants through the WorkOne Office once each month. Why not require a polygraph exam if they are that worried about filing fraud.

    There was a time when drawing unemployment was something that, if circumstances forced you to do it, you didn't want anybody to know about it. Being "on the dole" had a negative stigma about it. Not anymore. I know people who never looked for anything, just filled out the forms based upon ads they saw in the paper. My kids are in their 20s and all of the jobs they have had have had online applications, followed by face-to-face interviews. Getting a job may be a challenge, but applying for one has never been easier. If it stops just one scammer I'm all for it.

    It seems to me that one day for an in-person meeting and one day to submit at least 3 online applications would STILL LEAVE AT LEAST 18 WORK DAYS PER MONTH to schedule an interview if offered a chance for employment. Maybe you don't want to work if you think one meeting a month is unreasonable.

    They have to report every 4 weeks right?? Seems like plenty of time between these meetings to have more than 3 interviews
  • What next
    The lines will be 3 times longer now. You could spend all day in there trying to convince them you have been looking for 3 jobs. And applying for 3 jobs online has to be done by a certain day. When do the people have time to go on interviews if there are any offered?

Downtown Carmel or Keystone at the Crossing in Indy. It doesn't matter. All require you to get in your car to get just about anywhere you need to go. I'm in one of the Carmel apartments now where after just 2.5 short years one of the kitchen cabinet doors is crooked and lawn and property maintenance seems to be lacking my old Indianapolis apartment which cost $300 less. This is one of the new star apartments. As they keep building throughout the area "deals" will start popping up creating shoppers. If your property is falling apart after year 3 what will it look like after year 5 or 10??? Why would one stay here if they could move to a new Broad Ripple in 2 to 3 years or another part of the Far Northside?? The complexes aren't going to let the "poor" move in without local permission so that's not that problem, but it the occupancy rate drops suddenly because the "Young" people moved back to Indy then look out.

    5. Why are you so concerned about Ace hardware? I don't understand why anyone goes there! Every time ive gone in the past, they don't have what I need and I end up going to the big box stores. I understand the service aspect and that they try to be helpful but if they are going to survive I think they might need to carry more specialty parts.
