The second annual White River Festival, which spans the month of September, is designed to highlight the natural resource that literally runs through central Indiana’s back yard.
The festival is a project of the Upper White River Watershed Alliance, a regional not-for-profit coalition of local governments, educators, allied organizations, industries and citizens working together to improve and protect water resources throughout central Indiana.
The 16-county watershed—its groundwater, streams and reservoirs—provides water to thousands of area businesses and drinking water to residents.
Most Hoosiers don’t realize that some of the largest water users in our watershed are businesses like Citizens Energy Group, Eli Lilly and Co., Indianapolis Power & Light Co., Martin Marietta Materials and IMI Irving Materials.
Each of these industries draws more than a billion gallons of water annually from water resources within the Upper White River Basin, underscoring that ample, clean water is a cornerstone to a strong local economy and the supply of everyday utilities and amenities.
For those reasons and many more, our water resources are worth celebrating. We hope you’ll take part in festival activities to help you, your family and friends understand the critical value of water to our community.
