As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowState Bureau of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Andrew J. Miller resigned Thursday, the day after he was arrested for allegedly exposing himself in a public restroom in downtown Indianapolis.
Miller, 40, of Carmel was charged with public indecency about 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Claypool Court, a hotel and retail center near Circle Centre mall. Plainclothes police officers were investigating complaints of lewd activity in the area.
He was appointed BMV commissioner in December 2008 following stints as secretary of agriculture and director of the state's Office of Disaster Recovery.
Gov. Mitch Daniels' office announced Miller's resignation in a news release late Thursday afternoon.
"Andy Miller has been an exceptional public servant. … I also know him to be a devoted father to three children," Daniels said in the prepared statement. "If things are as reported, the law must be respected, but either way this is just an extremely sad situation."
Daniels named BMV Chief of Staff R. Scott Waddell as the new commissioner. Waddell owned Westfield-based Standard Locknut for 30 years before joining state government in March 2009.
