October 14, 2010

Roche Diagnostics Corp. has agreed to acquire certain assets of Charlottesville, Va.-based Medical Automation Systems Inc.

Terms of the deal, announced on Wednesday, call for Roche to acquire all the assets associated with the company’ RALS point-of-care information technology connectivity system. Roche also will purchase the names “Medical Automation Systems” and “RALS.”

Roche Diagnostics, a Swiss company that has its U.S. headquarters in Indianapolis, said it expects to retain 100, or most, of MAS’ employees.

“As a global leader in [point-of-care] testing, Roche is committed to helping improve the quality of patient care by providing products that support clinical decision-making,” Roche Diagnostics President and CEI Jack Phillips said in a written statement. “With this acquisition, we will build on our strategy to deliver integrated testing solutions to our customers.”

MAS’ point-of-care information management system is used in more than 2,000 hospitals in the United States.

Roche Diagnostics develops and commercializes technology in the field of serum-based laboratory and point-of-care testing, including its products used to monitor coagulation and blood glucose. They are used with the RALS information management systems in health care facilities across the country.

Roche has more than 80,000 employees worldwide, including roughly 2,900 at its campuses in Indianapolis and Fishers.
