Two partners at the Bingham McHale LLP law firm are taking five lawyers with them to form a firm that will concentrate on insurance defense work.

Dennis Cantrell and James Strenski are leaving the Indianapolis law firm to form Cantrell Strenski & Mehringer LLP. Susan Mehringer and Barbara Jones, who practice part time at Bingham McHale, will join the firm as partners.

Tara Stapleton Lutes, Anna Muehling Mallon and Catherine Haines will come aboard as associates.

All will leave Bingham McHale March 1. They won’t have far to go, however. The lawyers will sublease space on the 24th floor of Market Tower from their former firm.

Bingham McHale Managing Partner Toby McClamroch described the split as amicable and said his firm will continue to represent some insurance clients, mainly in the environmental industry.

Legal experts say insurance defense work historically has been lower-paying, higher-volume work.

Bingham McHale, the city’s fourth-largest firm, has 136 attorneys.
