As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowGeoffrey Bannister, who served as president of Butler University from 1988 to 2000, has been named president of Hawaii Pacific University, the school announced Monday.
Bannister, 65, will replace Chatt G. Wright, who has been with the university since 1972. Wright announced his retirement last year.
Hawaii Pacific, founded in 1965, is Hawaii’s largest private university. The Honolulu-based school has an undergraduate enrollment of about 6,900 and a total student population of about 8,500.
Bannister, who was born in the United Kingdom and raised in New Zealand, started the Institute for Study Abroad, one of the nation’s largest study-abroad programs, during his stay at Butler.
Undergraduate enrollment nearly doubled at Butler during Bannister’s tenure. In addition, he is widely credited with putting the building blocks in place to turn the Butler men’s basketball team into a national power.
After leaving Butler, Bannister served as president of the Forum on Education Abroad, a not-for-profit based at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., and then as president of CEA Global Education, a for-profit education provider based in Tempe, Ariz.
He most recently was president of Schiller International University, a private Florida-based university with seven worldwide campuses.
