Not guilty plea entered for secretary of state

March 11, 2011

A Hamilton County court magistrate has entered a not guilty plea for Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White, who was indicted last week on seven felony counts including voter fraud.

White appeared in court Friday in Noblesville north of Indianapolis to answer the charges, which also include perjury, theft and financial fraud.

A magistrate set an Aug. 8 trial date for White, who was indicted by a Hamilton County grand jury based on claims he lied about his address on various documents. Prosecutors contend White voted in last May's Republican primary after moving out of his ex-wife's home in Fishers and the town council district he represented.

White has acknowledged the voting error, but told reporters before the hearing that he was "absolutely innocent."
