In response to Mayor Ballard’s Citywide Food Initiative, banks in our community have combined forces to help restock food
pantries.
The Indianapolis Bank Food Drive Challenge is a friendly competition to collect nonperishable food or cash through Dec. 31.
The following banks [are] working to assist food pantries: Huntington Bank, Key Bank, National Bank of Indianapolis, Regions
Bank, National City Bank, Old National Bank, Fifth Third Bank, First Merchants Bank, Charter One, Chase and M&I Bank.
The nonperishable foods we collect will go to a local food pantry of the bank’s choosing. After the completion of our "food
fight," one of us will have bragging rights as the winner, the losers will contribute an additional $500 each to a local
food
pantry in the name of the winner, and our local food pantries should have more food and cash.
We will have some fun with our friendly competition, but we all know that this is a serious issue. Gleaners reports that more
than 205,000 people in its 20-county coverage area live in poverty, including 49,000 in Marion County, and one of every four
people in a food line is a child. Further, many of us have heard increasing accounts of many "first timers" contacting
food
and reaching out for help.
