A central Indiana city's mayor has resigned with less than a week left to go in his term.
The Herald Bulletin reported that Anderson Mayor Kris Ockomon submitted his resignation at a safety board meeting Monday.
Ockomon's resignation letter said he would return to his former employer, the city's police department.
Deputy Mayor Greg Graham is acting as mayor until Kevin Smith is sworn in on Sunday.
The newspaper said meeting minutes state Ockomon told the board he was returning to his former job now because Smith has said he might oppose Ockomon's return to the police department. Smith said Ockomon's return might require an officer to be laid off due to budget constraints.
Ockomon could not be reached for comment because his phone number is unlisted.
