Former Indianapolis Power & Light Co. executive and civic leader Ray Humke, 80, died Tuesday after a brief illness.

Humke was president of IPL from 1990 until he retired in 2001 after the utility was acquired by Virginia-based AES Corp.

Prior to his time at IPL, Humke was president and CEO of Ameritech Services and Indiana Bell Telephone Co.

He also served as chairman of the board of directors of Meridian Mutual Insurance Co. and of Monument Advisors Inc.

Humke was active in several civic and charitable organizations, and served stints as chairman at the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, Economic Club of Indianapolis, Corporate Community Council, United Way of Central Indiana, Indianapolis Symphony Society and 500 Festival Associates.

He received the Sagamore of the Wabash honor from Indiana Govs. Frank O’Bannon in 2000, Evan Bayh in 1989 and Robert Orr in 1987.

Services will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Dec. 27. Harry W. Moore Funeral Care and Crematory in Indianapolis is handling arrangements.
