Carmel-based KAR Auction Services, which is known for its chain of Adesa auto auctions, also owns a unit known as Insurance Auto Auctions, which finds buyers for wrecks.
IAA just introduced an application for Apple devices that allows salvage buyers to pay for vehicle purchases online, via a U.S. bank account.
The so-called I-Pay app will also be made available for Android devices later this year.
This is supposedly a first for the salvage vehicle auction business.
Customers of IAA have been able to actually bid on a vehicle via an app since December 2011.
Apps have also found a philanthropic purpose, in charitable auctions.
Indianapolis-based tech firm BidPal has for the last several years been creating software that allows those attending charitable auctions to bid and to pay via one’s wireless phone.
