Regarding Mickey Maurer’s [June 24] column on public education, I feel you have hit the nail on the head that the problem has to be tackled at the source—preschool education and the health and well being of the very young students.

The column mentions the civic pride we have in our wonderful sports town. So why not follow the sports franchise model to pull our schools out of their sorry state?

Following the sports model, let’s have a general manager, coach and players. Why not involve the many corporations in our city to help build new schools? Naming rights could be included. Pay top dollar to the coach and the teachers, and even have a payment plan for the kids who attend, perhaps putting money away for high school. Perhaps at the end of each year we have a super bowl of learning.

Changing leadership at the top, as is the current model, it seems has not worked, so why keep thinking success is around the corner? It seems drastic times call for drastic measures if there is to be a turnaround.
