Lessons lost on Kennedy

Sheila Kennedy’s [Aug. 12] column “Detroit reflects our moral bankruptcy” leads us down the same path she always goes. Detroit is a fine example of giving so much to those who can’t (or won’t) be productive until there is no more to give. It is what will happen to the entire country if we continue to let Washington redistribute the wealth according to how they think it should be. Obamacare is a classic example of these policies.

Kennedy’s comments contribute little to move us toward a solution. We should be asking:

• When can those of us who are productive feel as though we have given enough?

• Is how we give to those “in need” the most effective way to help them? John Wooden once said the worst thing you can do for someone you love is to do it for them. Maybe that’s what we are doing wrong today.

• Is socialism the answer or should we keep trying to massage capitalism, which is where our wealth came from? Society is better off when the emphasis is on freedom from government, not more government!

• Is what we have been doing for the last 50 years actually causing some of the problems we continue to experience? Maybe even causing the breakdown of the family?

It is amazing to me that a woman, who is from my generation, has not learned any of the lessons of the past 50 years.
