Police say a driver heading west in a Mercedes in the 6800 block of West Thompson Road about 7:20 saw two children in the middle of the road and swerved to miss them, but couldn't avoid the girl. The speed limit in the area is 40 mph and the lighting is poor. The driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with police.
