The mayor of Kokomo said the city will see a big boost from an amateur baseball team that will start playing in its new downtown stadium next year.

The Kokomo team will be part of the 12-team Prospect League, which features top collegiate players during the summer months and includes teams in the Indiana cities of Terre Haute and Richmond. Other teams are in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Illinois and West Virginia.

According to the Kokomo Tribune, team owner Mike Zimmerman of Milwaukee-based MKE Sports & Entertainment said Tuesday he believed the team will be successful because of Kokomo's love for sports and its downtown revitalization.

Zimmerman also owns the Milwaukee Wave of the Major Arena Soccer League.

Construction began in recent weeks on the $9 million Kokomo Municipal Stadium project. It will have about 2,300 seats and 1,500 spots for lawn seating.

Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight said the baseball team will bring family entertainment to the city's downtown.

MKE will pay the city at least $22,500 for use of the stadium, plus incentives that could boost the total to $100,000 a year over the five-year lease, the Kokomo Tribume reported. MKE will be responsible for maintenance, trash removal and utilities.

A team name will be chosen in the next 30 days through a community contest.
