Former Fishers attorney Brian L. Nehrig was sentenced Tuesday in a federal court to three years probation following his guilty plea to mail fraud.

Nehrig, 43, worked as a foreclosure attorney for Citifinancial in 2005 and 2006, submitting bids at sheriff’s sales for foreclosed homes. Nehrig was required to submit the proceeds to the company if the home sold to a third party.

But, according to the charges, Nehrig sometimes submitted inflated bids and had arrangements with friends and associates to purchase the properties for a few thousand dollars more than the minimum bid requested by Citifinancial.

Nehrig did not send Citifinancial the profits, the court said, and determined the loss to Citifinancial to be $66,000. The company has been repaid through an insurance claim.

U.S. District Judge Sarah E. Barker, who sentenced Nehrig, also imposed six months of home confinement and required Nehrig to perform eight hours of community service per month for each of the 36 months he is on probation. He was fined $2,500.

Nehrig since has had his law license revoked.

The case resulted from an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
