The Salvation Army of Indiana announced Wednesday morning that it reached its holiday fundraising goal of $2.93 million after a last-minute appeal.

"We continue to be amazed and grateful for the generosity of the people of central Indiana," Salvation Army of Indiana Development Director Jeff Stanger said.

In 2009, the Army fell short of its goal in the annual Tree of Lights campaign by nearly $300,000 and was forced to dip into its strategic cash reserve to continue services. The outlook was not much better this past holiday season. As of Jan. 4, the charity said it was $468,925 short of its goal. Stanger said that money has come in over the past two weeks, well ahead of a Jan. 31 deadline.

The Salvation Army reports that in 2010, it served more than 1,400 people struggling with substance abuse, provided more than 79,000 "safe nights" of shelter for women and children and served more than 202,000 meals. Those services will continue in 2011.
