Baggage wrapping is here, thanks to a contract the Indianapolis Airport Authority recently struck with Miami-based Global Baggage Protection Systems Inc.
For as little as $9, a traveler can wrap a bag in blue-colored, tamper-proof recyclable plastic film.
As with Grandma’s practice, wrapping reduces wear and tear. But more practically for the airport environment, Secure Wrap film makes it tougher for someone to rifle through the contents of one’s bag.
The biggest challenging is convincing passengers that wrapping is worth it because there’s always the chance the Transportation Security Administration might open the bag, later, for secondary screening, said Daniel Valdespino, executive director of Secure Wrap.
But he said the company worked with TSA to come up with a practice to quickly rewrap items that are opened for inspection.
The service is being offered at 53 airports in 19 countries.
