As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowMemphis-based International Paper Co. has informed state officials that a temporary layoff of 87 employees at its plant southwest of downtown Indianapolis will last months longer than expected.
The company said in a notice posted Wednesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development that it laid off the employees on Nov. 2 and anticipated calling them back soon after the first of the year.
But a “major” customer’s decision to cancel product orders at International’s Sherwood packaging facility at 620 S. Belmont Ave. has prompted the company to extend the layoff “well into the second quarter.”
More than two-thirds of the affected employees, or 57, are classified as “general factory” workers. Others include prepress specialists and press operators, as well as die makers and die-cut operators.
The local Shorewood Packaging plant has roughly 300 employees.
International Paper’s Shorewood Packaging division is headquartered in Stamford, Conn., and is a provider of printing, packaging and retail display products.
