City announces street closures for Super Bowl

Several streets in downtown Indianapolis, including part of Monument Circle and those surrounding Lucas Oil Stadium, will be closed in the few weeks leading up to the Super Bowl on Feb. 5, the city announced Thursday.

The Super Bowl Host Committee announced the street closings Thursday afternoon as part of its transportation and parking plan to help visitors to the week-long festivities navigate the downtown. An estimated 150,000 visitors are expected for the game and related activities.

Closings will begin on Jan. 19 and a few will last as long as until Feb. 13.

Capitol Avenue

— Closed from Maryland Street to South Street beginning Jan. 19. Access to the Plaza Park Garage on Capitol Avenue will be available throughout the event.

— Will have fewer available lanes from Ohio Street to Maryland Street beginning Jan. 19. 

— Closed from South Street to McCarty Street from Jan. 28 to Feb. 6.

Illinois Street (North of Georgia Street)

— Lane restrictions begin on Jan. 21. 

— Closed from Georgia Street to Maryland Street except for exiting traffic from the World of Wonders Parking Garage starting on Jan. 27. 

— Will reopen to traffic the afternoon of Feb. 8.

Illinois Street (South of Georgia Street)

— Lane restrictions begin on Jan. 21, transitioning to fewer lanes northbound from Interstate 70 to Georgia Street.

— Closed from Louisiana Street to Georgia Street starting Jan. 27.

— Two-way traffic from South Street to Louisiana Street starting Jan. 27, providing access to Pan Am Garage, Crowne Plaza, and the Omni Hotel. 

— Will reopen to traffic the afternoon of Feb. 8.

— Closed from McCarty Street to South Street on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5. 

— Full-size motor coaches or oversize vehicles will not be permitted west of Meridian Street from Jan. 27 to Feb. 8. All motor coaches and stretch limousines will be directed south on Meridian Street at South Street to McCarty Street and to other routes.  

Meridian Street (North of Georgia Street)

— Lane restrictions begin on Jan. 23, with the closure of southbound Meridian Street from Maryland to Georgia Street.

— Northbound Meridian Street closed from Georgia Street to Maryland Street on Jan. 27.

— Meridian Street north of Georgia Street will reopen to traffic in the afternoon of Feb. 8.

Meridian Street (South of Georgia Street)

— Lane restrictions begin on Jan. 23

— Closed from Georgia Street to Louisiana Street starting Jan. 27 and will reopen to traffic in the afternoon of Feb. 8.

— Full size motor coaches or oversize vehicles will not be permitted west of Meridian Street from Jan. 27 to Feb. 8. All motor coaches and stretch limousines will be directed south on Meridian at South Street to McCarty Street and the Super or Bowl Routes.

Monument Circle (Southern Half) and Meridian Street

— Meridian Street closed from Washington Street to Monument Circle on Jan. 27 to Jan. 29.

— Meridian Street closed from Washington Street to Monument Circle on Feb. 3 to Feb. 5.

Market Street (west of Monument Circle)

— Closed to east-bound traffic on the west side of Monument Circle around the southern half to Pennsylvania Street from Jan. 27 to Jan. 29 and from Feb. 3 to Feb. 5.

Pennsylvania Street

— Lane restrictions begin on Jan. 23.

— Closed from Maryland Street to South Street starting Jan. 27, except for CSX employee parking access.

— Will reopen to traffic in the afternoon of Feb. 6.

Georgia Street(Capitol Avenue to Illinois Street)

— Closed from Capitol Avenue to Illinois Street starting Jan. 19. 

— Will reopen to all traffic on Feb. 10.

Georgia Street(Illinois Street to Meridian Street)

— Closed from Illinois Street to Meridian Street eastbound starting Jan. 21. 

— Closed from Illinois Street to Meridian Street westbound starting Jan. 27. 

— Will reopen to traffic in the afternoon of Feb. 8.

Georgia Street(Meridian Street to Pennsylvania Street)

— East bound closed on Jan. 23.

— West bound closed on Jan. 27.

— Will reopen to traffic in the afternoon of Feb. 8.

South Street

— Lane restrictions from Missouri Street to Capitol Avenue starting Jan. 19.

— Closed from Missouri Street to Capitol Avenue starting Jan. 22 through Feb. 13.

— Closed from West Street to Illinois Street on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 5.

— Will begin opening to traffic in the afternoon of Feb. 6 and will be completely open by Feb. 17.

Missouri Street(Closed Super Bowl weekend)

— Closed from McCarty Street to South Street starting late morning on Feb. 3.

— Closed from McCarty to Maryland on Super Bowl Sunday Feb. 5.

— Will reopen to traffic on the afternoon of Feb. 6.

Merrill Street

— Closed from Capitol Avenue to Illinois Street starting on Feb. 3 and will reopen in the afternoon of Feb. 6.

— Closed Super Bowl Sunday only:

I-70 Exit 79A, West Street off I-70

— Closed Super Bowl Sunday

Russell Avenue
