A yearbook manufacturing plant that employs 130 people in North Carolina is closing.

The Charlotte Observer reported that Herff Jones Inc. of Indianapolis has decided to close its plant in Matthews by the end of the year.

The company has four other yearbook production plants in the United States. The newspaper reported that a company decided that its plant in Gettysburg, Pa., would better serve the eastern United States.

The spokeswoman said the Matthews employees were told about the decision Monday. She said some of the Matthews employees might be able to move to jobs elsewhere in the company.

Earlier this year, Herff Jones launched an online product that company officials think could be a lifeline for the struggling yearbook industry—and help the company grab a bigger share of the $800 million annual yearbook market.

Herff Jones also makes educational products, recognition awards and other graduation-related items.
