The Indiana Department of Transportation will build a U.S. 31 interchange at State Road 28 near the future Chrysler Tipton Transmission Plant.

INDOT said it will start construction on the $17 million interchange in 2015.

Chrysler plans to start installing equipment in June and launch operations by the end of 2014.

Chrysler announced in December that it would spend $162 million to open the roughly 800,000-square-foot factory at U.S. 31 and S.R. 28. Chrysler and Getrag Transmission of Germany partnered to build the plant in 2007, but it never opened because the partnership unraveled.

“We will make Indiana the state that works by supporting economic development through infrastructure improvements,” Gov. Mike Pence said in a prepared statement. “The new U.S. 31 and S.R. 28 exit will accommodate increased commuter and truck traffic while advancing ongoing efforts to remove stoplights on the highway between Indianapolis and South Bend.”

Indiana is upgrading and bypassing congested sections of U.S. 31 near Kokomo, South Bend and Indianapolis. When completed, the projects are expected to remove 32 stoplights from the route, cutting a half hour off travel time.•
