Beauty products maker Ulta Inc. plans to open a fulfillment and distribution center in Greenwood that will employ as many as 537 people by 2018, the Bolingbrook, Ill.-based company announced Thursday afternoon.

The company said it will invest $51.6 million to lease and equip a 670,000 square-foot facility in Southpoint Business Park, between Graham Road and Interstate 65.

The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered Ulta up to $3 million in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job-creation plans. The city of Greenwood approved additional property-tax abatement.

The IEDC did not respond to multiple requests from IBJ for information on the average wage the new jobs will pay. Ulta refused to provide the information, but issued a statement saying the "wages will be competitive within the region."

“This is great news for Greenwood and will serve as an anchor for development along the Graham Road corridor, and will provide hundreds of jobs,” said Greenwood Mayor Mark Myers in a prepared statement. "The infrastructure improvements will enable adjacent parcels to be shovel ready."

Ulta, founded in 1990, sells more than 20,000 hair, skin, bath, cosmetic and fragrance products through its Ulta Beauty retail stores and website, www.ulta.com. The company has 675 retail stores nationally, including 13 in Indiana that employ more than 300 workers.

The fulfillment center, Ulta’s first in Indiana, expects to start shipments in 2015.

ULTA said it plans to begin hiring warehouse associates and clerks, material handlers, human resource workers, managers and a distribution center director this summer.

Ulta has other distribution centers in Illinois, Arizona and Pennsylvania. The company has about 19,000 employees nationwide.
