The IndyGo board of directors on Thursday night chose Bloomington-based Weddle Bros. Building Group LLC to build the planned Downtown Transit Center.

Weddle's bid of $16,894,000 was the lowest of six  for the project.

The Downtown Transit Center is expected to be the hub for the bus system in Indianapolis. The $20 million center at 201 E. Washington St. will feature a 14,000-square-foot building with a public indoor waiting area, space for IndyGo customer-service employees and facilities for bus operators. The 2-acre site will have 19 canopied bus bays, according to plans unveiled in February.

"The award of the construction contract represents a significant milestone for the transit center project," IndyGo CEO Michael Terry said in a prepared statement. "We're excited to break ground before the end of September."

IndyGo said Weddle Bros. has more than 60 years of experience in constructing facilities for the public and private sectors. Other Weddle Bros. operations besides the Building Group include WB Koester, Weddle Bros. Highway Group, Weddle Bros. Design & Build, and WB Transportation Services.

Other firms that bid to construct the Downtown Transit Center were JC Ripberger Construction, Gibralter, McDougall-Pierce, Wilhelm and SM Wilson.
