Subscribe NowPurdue University is planning a ceremony to mark the opening of a nearly $29 million facility that will consolidate drug research centers at the school, as well as a $16 million expansion of a cancer research center.
The two new buildings are joining Discovery Park, the university's hub for interdisciplinary research in West Lafayette.
Purdue President Mitch Daniels said the school hopes the Drug Discovery Facility and the Bindley Multidisciplinary Cancer Research Facility will help recruit star researchers and students and make major contributions to a healthier world.
The three-story Drug Discovery Facility will house the Purdue Center for Drug Discovery, with more 100 faculty in six colleges leading research focused on several major disease categories, including cancer; diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular; immune and infectious disease; and neurological disorders and trauma.
The Bindley building will be expanded by 29,000 square feet, allowing Purdue to advance its work on animal models of disease, development of therapeutics, and in-vivo animal imaging.
Discovery Park Executive Director Alan Rebar said the buildings will accelerate the school's efforts to develop a curriculum and learning culture that focuses on all aspects of drug discovery and cancer research.
"These cutting-edge facilities in the promising life sciences arena will be a magnet for attracting leading faculty and top-tier students," he said in a written statement.
The ceremony is scheduled for Friday.
