The downtown Square Donuts shop at 1 N. Pennsylvania St. will close on Sept. 30 as another prepares to open in Greenwood.

“We will miss it here but hope that this is not goodbye and that you will continue to visit and support us at our other locations,” a sign on the door of the Pennsylvania location says.

The downtown store is operated by local franchisee Mike O’Leary, who has “several new locations in the works,” the sign says. Phone messages left for O’Leary seeking comment on the closing were not returned.

The downtown shop opened in July 2013, taking the space formerly occupied by Henry's Coffee Bistro.

O'Leary also operates Square Donut locations at 6416 W. Washington St., 14 S. Rangeline Road in Carmel in the Arts & Design District, and 8745 E. 116th St. in Fishers.

Square Donuts also has stores in Terre Haute, Bloomington and Richmond.

The franchisee of the two Richmond locations, J.C. Price, is opening a Square Donuts shop in Greenwood, at 1277 N. State Road 135 just south of County Line Road, according to a construction filing. The store will operate in the nearly 3,000-square-foot building formerly occupied by Meridian Veterinary Clinic.

Square Donuts was founded in Terre Haute in 1967 and opened its first franchise in 2006, in Bloomington.

Meanwhile, competitor Jack’s Donuts opened in August at 135 W. Market St. in the downtown space formerly occupied by a Noble Roman’s pizzeria. Also in August, it anounced that it planned to open a shop in Greenwood at 3115 Meridian Parke Drive.
