Community, Westview hospitals in 'strategic alliance' talks

Community Health Network and Westview Hospital are in talks about a “strategic alliance,” the two Indianapolis hospitals announced Thursday afternoon.

Westview, located at West 38th Street and Guion Road, said its board of directors chose Community for exclusive talks after considering several other potential partners. In a joint statement, the hospitals said they are both looking “to meet the challenge of health reform and fulfill their shared missions.”

Westview requested proposals for a strategic alliance from the four major hospitals systems in Indianapolis earlier this year. Community operates five hospitals in Indianapolis and Anderson.

The two entites are entering the “due diligence” phase, during which they will determine what form their alliance will take. Westview CEO Jon Anderson said he hopes to have a letter of intent by year's end. He would not directly say if Westview wants to remain independent or merge with Community.

"Certainly, Westview Hospital wants to continue to exist. There’s a really great heritage at this hospital," Anderson said. "Whether independence or not is the right word, we certainly want to know that we’re going to grow and prosper."

Many independent hospitals have been looking to partner with larger systems in recent years in a bid for greater efficiencies through buying power with vendors, particularly on information technology, negotiating leverage with health insurers, access to specialist physicians and more attractive financing terms for capital projects.

Westview leaders want to expand some service lines and add specialists to help take on the training of 30 new medical students each year, who will come when Marian University opens a new college of osteopathic medicine in the fall of 2012. In addition, Westview said the health reform law's encouragement of doctors and hospitals to take financial responsibility for the care of patients required Westview to find a larger partner with whom to share that risk.

"Those challenges will be better met with increased size," Anderson said. "So we think aligning and partnering with a bigger institution will help."

Westview has 67 beds and pulled in revenue of $106 million in its 2009 fiscal year, according to the website AHD.com. Community Health’s facilities have roughly 1,000 beds and pull in revenue of $1.2 billion.

“They’ve reached out to everyone to help them support what they do, and we said that we would do that,” said Mills. “We’re very supportive of their mission.”

Westview is the state’s only hospital of osteopathic medicine, which focuses especially on patients’ overall wellness. Community said it supports osteopathic medicine, and noted that it has committed $5 million toward the construction of Marian's new college of osteopathic medicine in Indianapolis.

Community has not joined the recent spate of acquisitions by Indianapolis’ two largest hospital systems, Clarian Health and St. Vincent Health.

However, Mills said Community is interested in joining forces with other hospitals in the right circumstances.

“We are interested, with the right hospitals in the right location,” he said.

My name is Mr Henry Josh and i live in the USA California and life is worth living right now for me and my family and all this is because of one man sent by GOD to help me and my family, i once had a life filled with sorrow because my first SON needed a kidney transplant and all our savings were going towards his medications and this normally leaves us with no money to pay our bills or even put enough food on our table and our rent was due and no funds to pay these bills and life felt so unfair to me and every night my wife will cry herself to sleep every night until one day, i was browsing through yahoo answers and i saw a striking advert of a man that gives out personal loans and that the offer is opened to all and i have heard so many things about internet scams but at this point of my life, i was very desperate and ready to take any risk and at the end of the day, i applied for this loan and from one step to another, i got my loan within 12 hours through bank transfer and you know, it was all like a dream and i called Mr Daniel Jones A Man who is the GOD sent lender i found and said, i have received my loan and he smiled stating that to GOD be the glory and i was so shocked as i have never ever seen anyone with such a GOD fearing and kind heart and today, i am the happiest man on earth because by GOD’S grace, my SON kidney transplant was successful and today he is healthy, i and my family are living very comfortable and happy and if you are in my former situation or in serious and legitimate need of a loan, you can reach this GOD sent lender via fidelityloanfirm@outlook.com

  4. Elected officials, like Mourdock, get vested in 8 years. It takes 10 years for all other public employees, most of whom make a lot less money. So much for the promise to finish out his term.

  5. Great state treasurer and a good man!! Just curious if the folks who didn't quite understand his quote would like to tell my daughter-in-law that God didn't intend her! Mourdock's comment was correct but twisted and the article didn't mention that his opponent and the press let the impression stand that Mourdock meant that the rape was intended. Stupid people!!
