In a political climate where jobs is the watchword of every campaign, I am confused and saddened by the state Senate Education Committee’s 7-4 vote endorsing a bill that would mandate the teaching of cursive writing in elementary school. It is backward-looking, places unnecessary burdens on overburdened teachers and does nothing to develop competent 21st century citizens.
Virtually none of my students write in cursive; all of them, however, must be able to write well using a computer.
