DINING: Kitchen still a bit rocky at rock 'n' roll newcomer

Dining - A&E

Daddy Real’s The Place (3855 E. 96th St., 218-3951) may well be “the place,” but you wouldn’t have known it on the night I visited. Despite being prime dinner time, the vibe was decidedly after hours, when the lights are up and instruments and microphone stands populate the otherwise empty stage.

Kudos to the folks at Daddy Real’s for adding another live music venue to Indy dining life. It’s just awkward when a confused website and an erratic schedule turn what could be a lively entertainment-plus-food evening into what feels like a visit to the set of a late-night Cinemax thriller. If Tom Berenger played the owner, I wouldn’t be surprised.

The food was ambitious for a club like this, although not exceptional in execution. The Cajun Steak Tips ($8.99) was little more than an unattractive, barely-seasoned bowl-o-meat and the French Onion Soup ($3.99) substandard and overly salty.

Better were the Barbecue Applewood Bacon Cheddar Burger ($9.99), which offered a nice balance of all the ingredients involved, and the Scampi Grouper ($15.99), presenting an edible but forgettable pair of pan-seared Grouper filets on a bed of lettuce in an easygoing white wine garlic sauce. Best of our meal was the Hawaiian Lava Salted Tuna Steak ($15.99) triangulated and presented, like its seafood brethren, with nicely roasted small potatoes.

Indy is no stranger to music venues that display talent in the kitchen. With some work—and with a clearer focus, Daddy Real’s could be a place mentioned alongside The Jazz Kitchen and The Slippery Noodle. But, for now, a revisit is best planned around who’s on stage rather than what’s delivered to the table.• –Lou Harry

  • Never again
Went once, the food, service, and attitude of management were TERRIBLE! One and done. I wouldn't go back if they paid me.
  • They are new
Thank you for your thoughts. Keep in mind, that this place is very new!! Unlike many other new CHAIN type of places, Daddy Real's The Place doenst have the bottomless pockets as many others do. Slow growth isn't always bad. I appreciate your thoughts on the food. Everything in that place is made from scratch. Evne thier chips. I also know they use the very best meats, and freshes of vegetables. I have eaten at this place too many times and plan on eating there many more. Maybe a visit back in June when they have so many good things going on will give you a lift in spirits of The Place. Last but not least, its not a night club, This place allows all ages. In fact, they are sold out all weekend with the School of Rock of Carmel coming in. Just my thoughts, May God Bless you and yours, William

  2. We are a nation of speed. All of our younger lives are filled with deadlines, quotas and bottom lines. We start to ease out of the pressured rat-race when we finally see "retirement." The most enjoyable travel on the planet is passenger rail service. Indy to Chicago does not beat Megabus or Southwest Airlines in speed. Passenger rail however has the best seating, mammoth legroon, seat backs that recline to more than 45 degrees and employers that really want you to return as a customer. Indiana municipalities need to maintain subsidies to support this transportation mode. Losing it is loss for all of us.

  4. Its a THUG issue. Bleecker Street and NYX are thug bars. They attract thugs of all races. Places that attract thugs need to be kicked out of Broad Ripple. Ain't nobody got time for that!
