DINING: Rockstone rolls into Fishers

Dining - A&E

Do the northern suburbs need another pizza place? With a recent onslaught of pie purveyors, that’s a legitimate question.

However, if said pizza place comes in the guise of a friendly neighborhood watering hole that carries with it the Sahm’s pedigree, I thought it at least worth a visit. And after that visit, it’s a pleasure to report that Rockstone Pizzeria & Pub (11501 Allisonville Road, Fishers, 288-9761) does what it does well.

Oh, perhaps the Spinartigoat Dip ($6.95) doesn’t come across as much more exciting than an average spinach artichoke appetizer—despite the addition of goat cheese and barely perceptible fresh basil. But what counts is what’s delivered from the wood-burning, brick oven. There, Rockstone does just fine. And with 24 beers on tap, there are plenty of washing-it-down options.

Pies run a bit steep at $10.50-$13.50 for a signature 10-inch version, although you can go as low as $7.50 for basic cheese. (You can opt for wood-fired or go the traditional route.) The Sassy Karl proved a good choice on the wood-fired front, smartly combining chorizo, diced capacollo (from Goose the Market), chili oil, pepperoncini, mozzarella and the house tomato sauce. Keeping the topping pieces small, each slice included the intended mix, and the thin-ish crust was nonetheless substantial enough to carry its weight.

Other options you might not find at other pizzerias include a Roast Pork Pie (with a Dijon mustard barbecue sauce) and a Club Med (with artichokes, basil pesto and, a theme here, pistachios.)

Sharing space in that oven are baked pasta dishes, including Shrimp Bisque ($12.95), which is not to be confused with its soupy namesake. This dish features cavatappi pasta (that’s a twisty, medium-thick variation) mixed with roasted tomatoes, ricotta, mozzarella, more than a half dozen large shrimp, a shrimp bisque sauce and a smattering of pistachios.

Sandwiches here are housed on thick, grilled, house-made focaccia—which means taking half of your order home is a distinct possibility. Each includes a side Rockstone salad (mixed greens, peppadew peppers, red onion, mozzarella and those pistachios), Greek salad, chips or a hearty penne pasta salad.

The one vegetarian sandwich option, the Stuffed Veggie ($7.95), nicely melds roasted tomatoes, fresh basil pesto, crimini mushroom, fresh spinach and peperonata. At a similar price point to what you’d find at Panera, this is a distinct upgrade.

A bonus: If you’ve saved room, you can order Caramel Pineapple a la Mode ($4.95). Imagine a banana split that replaces the core ingredient with strips of fresh pineapple, glazed and caramelized, topping it with gelato and, yes, again, those crushed pistachios—which help give it a bit of crunch. Option B is the Nutella Nuggets ($3.95), which will have to wait until next time.

And that return might be for the weekly trivia night in the adults-only bar area (the family dining area is completely separate, which could be another selling point for both families and adults without kids).•

  • FIRST PIZZA IN INDY
I first tasted pizza in NYC at Patsy Lanciera-s (claimed first pizza maker in NYC) but there was NO pizza in Indy at that time--early 50's--until some brave pioneer opened the "first"--on E.side Meridian at 22 & N.Meridian (then a cocktail/upscale bar scene.) It was the same year that men's fashions featured dress-up shorts in men's attire even for formal occasions. I remember our 4 some creating a sensation when my husband and friend showed up in dress shorts for a formal event at the Athletic Club--and heading home around midnight we saw a line at the pizza as we headed home--parked and got out and stood in line to buy pizza. For the next several weeks my husband and buddy were afire with plan to open "the first pizza spot in Broad Ripple (then just a village.) They gave it up on learning the price of a pizza oven!!!!
  • Another good Sahm's venture
I've eaten here twice so far, and enjoyed it both times. The first time, my husband and I shared the Roast Pork pizza which was excellent with the smoky pulled pork and mustardy sauce on a wheat crust. We also had a basic pepperoni and sausage pizza with red sauce on a traditional crust ... good sauce which was not too sweet, but a bit boring compared to the pork pizza. On our next trip, my husband had the Pasta Med Primavera which he liked a lot and I had the Rustica pizza, again on whole wheat crust. One of the things I appreciate about Rockstone is that they chop their pizza toppings very fine and spread them evenly across the pie ... so you get a little bit of everything in each bite. The wheat crust is an excellent choice, it's hearty and a nice chewy/crunchy texture. Rockstone is somewhere between your basic American pizza and the wood-fired Neopolitan style ... definitely American toppings but a bit more flair ... and you gotta love the addition of Smoking Goose meats.

  1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

  3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
