Neither the current sheriff, Democrat John Layton, nor any challengers had filed for the May primary by Jan. 13, but Republican Emmitt Carney’s campaign finance report shows that he’s off to a strong start in fundraising.
Carney raised $45,165 last year and spent $38,407, according to the report he filed Jan. 10.
That included large gifts from the local party establishment: $5,000 from Al Hubbard, $1,000 from Bob Grand and $1,000 from City-County Councilor Jack Sandlin.
Carney, who lives on the west side, has law-enforcement credentials. He was an agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for 25 years. Carney kicked off his campaign in October with an event at The Alexander hotel, and he recorded an in-kind contribution valued at $5,377 from Buckingham Cos., developer of the CityWay property that includes the upscale boutique hotel.
