Heartened by support for same-sex marriage

While my husband and I now live far from the Hoosier state (we met while working for then-Indiana Attorney General Pamela Carter, back in the day), the rest of my family still calls Indiana home. And I am a double Indiana University-Bloomington grad (and alum of the law school that now bears Maurer’s name), so I read with interest Mickey Maurer’s [Feb. 17] column regarding State Sen. Mike Delph and House Joint Resolution 3.

I want to thank Maurer for speaking so directly and so thoughtfully about marriage discrimination and the real-life impact the absence of equality is having on Hoosiers everyday. I was saddened, not just by Delph’s position on HJR 3, but even more so by some of his most unfortunate and incendiary remarks on social media after the events of the past week. In my experience, members of the General Assembly have historically held themselves to a higher standard.

But I am heartened by the growing chorus of Hoosiers like Maurer who are standing up for equality and justice. Indiana is indeed a great state, and it deserves great leadership, too. Here’s to hoping that the future includes many more Maurers and far fewer Delphs.
