Indiana bottle maker pushing for refund law

Back to TopCommentsE-mailPrintBookmark and Share

A central Indiana company that makes glass bottles and jars is urging state lawmakers to pass legislation requiring refundable deposits on beverages sold in recyclable bottles and cans.

Verallia North America senior vice president Stephen Segebarth told a joint meeting of the Indiana House and Senate environmental affairs committees on Monday that the bill would boost job creation by providing discarded glass or metal for companies that turn the waste into new products.

Verallia employs about 650 workers in Indiana at plants in Muncie and Dunkirk.

Segebarth said last May at the Indiana Recycling Coalition’s annual meeting in Indianapolis that a recycling plan for the state could change the industry.

Factories operated by Verallia, Anchor Glass and Owens-Illinois employ more than 1,600 people in the state. Their need for discarded glass, known as cullet, far exceeds all 700 million glass containers used in the state annually, Segebarth said.

Representatives of Indiana Farm Bureau and Richmond-based Perpetual Recycling Solutions also testified Tuesday in favor the bill that calls for a 5-cent or 10-cent refundable deposit on recyclable containers,The Star Press reported.

But grocery stores, supermarkets and convenience stores are among the bill's opponents.

Since 1986, Hawaii is the only state that's enacted a bottle-refund bill.

....thus my 1955 mentality comment. The rest of the country continues to laugh.
  • recycle
move to those other states if you believe your recycling makes a difference, it doesn't and the outfit makes money off of your efforts; hah!
    • Misleading statement
If you read the article you'd think Hawaii is the only other state to do this but there are 10 others that have the law, many of them since the early 80s. When I moved here from Iowa I had the same reaction as Mich Man. Iowa, Michigan and all the other states are MUCH cleaner than Indiana. Perhaps we might at least join the 21st Century on one issue since on most others it's still 1955.
    • Bring Back Glass Now
We need to do this - I am always amazed at the aisles and aisles of plastic bottles of EVERYTHING in stores. We are such a throw away society and the landfills and rivers, etc. are choking to death. If we went back to glass bottles on everything and had the deposit collection in force, then recycling and reduction of plastic would be so good for the earth.
    • In Favor
Since moving to Indiana from Michigan 3 years ago I still find it hard to throw away glass bottles or cans. I am a big fan to add the deposit. No it's not always fun to have to deal with returning the bottles and cans and it can be a little painful to pay the deposit up front. However, the overall impact is better with cleaner roads, more conscious recycling habits and obviously bottle makers getting more supply of used glass. I vote yes!

You sure this ain't Obamacare taxes on sugary drinks and booze?

    5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
