Indiana to negotiate with Amtrak over Hoosier State line

The Indiana Department of Transportation has begun contract negotiations with Amtrak over continuing the Hoosier State line from Indianapolis to Chicago, meaning the service won't necessarily halt on Oct. 16, INDOT announced Tuesday.

Amtrak is seeking a $3 million annual subsidy from Indiana since Congress voted in 2008 to end federal support for all routes less than 750 miles. That affected the Hoosier State, which operates four days per week, and routes in 19 other states. (Amtrak’s long-distance Cardinal service, which operates the remaining three days per week between Cincinnati and Chicago via Indianapolis, is not affected by this decision.)

Amtrak had given Indiana a 180-day notice that the Hoosier State would end on Oct. 16, but the passenger rail company has said would not end service in states that were holding good-faith negotiations by Oct. 1, according to INDOT.

INDOT began last week talking with communities along the route about making local money available as part of the financing package. That cleared the way to start talks with Amtrak.

“Governor [Mike] Pence supports the joint local and state effort to continue this passenger rail service, but with the negotiations, there are still a number of hurdles to be cleared,” INDOT Commissioner Karl Browning said in a prepared statement. “There’s common interest among state and local officials to ensure that the service is accountable for the tax dollars being invested.”

Communities that contribute funding would also be involved in overseeing performance of the service on a recurring basis, according to INDOT. Specific contributions among all parties will not be known until negotiations with Amtrak conclude.

INDOT says that a $3 million subsidy divided among each one-way passenger amounts to $80 in government support per $24 ticket.

Amtrak officials have said that its repair facility in Beech Grove — a major employer in the Indianapolis area — could lose work if the Hoosier State doesn't continue because that would limit the company's access to three days a week.

Lafayette and Crawfordsville, which see many college students and their families using the service to Chicago, have lobbied to continue the service. The mayor of Beech Grove, Dennis Buckley, attended a recent meeting with local officials, but no one from Indianapolis was available, INDOT spokesman Will Wingfield said.

    We need to do this but only for the Beech Grove repair facility jobs. Our family did the Indy to Chicago trip a few years ago simply to check 'travelled by train' off of our lifetime to-do list. Taking a comfortable and inexpensive three hour car drive and turning it into an uncomfortable and relatively expensive six and a half hour train ride was quite annoying. I didn't think you could find anyone more unfriendly than US postal service employees until we encountered Amtrak "customer service" employees.

    My family and I used this route a couple years ago and it took 7 1/2 hrs to get to Chicago and 7 1/2 hours to get back. It was the worst experience we've had traveling. I'm all for train travel but be serious about it. The current setup is not good. If you can't do it right then don't do it at all.
  • Who uses Amtrak?
    I don't know 1 person who has ever used this train (bus to Chitown, yes). It obviously it's a money loser. Amtrak can support themselves (alter the schedule, make it attactive to those who don't use it, advertise for business). Why are we handing them OUR tax $?

    INDOT should invest in the track to reduce the travel time and make the service more convenient and competitive. Indiana is way behind IL, MI and others in this regard.

In which country is our globetrotting mayor vacationing, I mean "working", this week? Couldn't someone who didn't make the trip have shown up to the meeting to represent Indianapolis?

  2. Its easy to blame workers. What about the Management of the Mill. Its not smart in business to not have a back up plan. Workers are afforded sick days in most cases. Union or not. Whether drunk partying, or a real sickness. Why would you as a businessman/woman not have a rotation of workers incase this happens. This is not an exclusive union protection. If the company can prove bad intentions on the part of any union employee. They can take action. Most CBA's have a 3 strike policy. Just like most Non-union company policies. You should read a CBA sometime. There are protections for companies too. Unions understand that businesses need to make money. If they don't, the union's member won't have a place to work.

  3. My kids play hockey on the North side and we have been very happy with the youth program. More Ice would create more opportunity for kids to pay this great sport. With 3 rinks that would also create more figure skating opportunities. What better gift to give your kids than a sport they will love!

  4. Naah, only Indy place fans were robbed of seeing Zanardi race. CART fans saw his amazing talents just about every weekend. And F1 fans saw him too. Zanardi didn't care he wasn't at Indy, neither do 99.18% of other race fans world wide. And CART fans are quite pleased of the domination of their drivers and owners have had at Indy, in the IRL, and in the current Indycar series....almost 99.18% of the time since 2000 Indy 500. I respect Zanardi, but his life goes on without Indy. Sucks to be you Capt.

  5. So let me get this right: gun permits online are fraud proof, but voting is as easy as 1-2-3.--But at least we agree that someone without a photo ID cannot be trusted with a gun.
