Proposal would cut sales tax for propane users

Indiana senators will act to provide relief to Hoosiers hurt by a Midwest shortage of propane that’s boosted prices to higher than normal levels.

Republicans say they will offer an amendment to Senate Bill 1 to eliminate the sales tax on any propane that costs more than $2.50 per gallon. Some customers are paying as much as $5 per gallon.

Sens. John Waterman, R-Shelburn; Doug Eckerty, R-Yorktown; and Jim Smith, R-Charlestown, proposed the amendment.

“Folks are paying high prices and struggling even to find propane at all,” Waterman said.  “Our plan will exempt the sales tax from any charge above $2.50 per gallon on propane.”

The demand in propane has affected Hoosiers, Waterman explained, especially in rural areas where it is a primary source of fuel for heating.

Sen. Brandt Hershman, R-Buck Creek, author of SB 1, said he supports the amendment.

“I believe the amendment offered today will ease many of the concerns that propane consumers and lawmakers have voiced,” Hershman said.

Eckerty said he does not expect the amendment to reduce state revenue because prices were not expected to be this high.

“We were only collecting on $2.50 per gallon anyway so the big run up in price is not something we anticipate,” Eckerty said.

The exemption will extend to March. Waterman said that if the plan becomes law, people will see a credit on their next propane bill for the amount of their exemption.

“Gov. (Mike) Pence and federal officials have taken emergency steps to get more propane to the Hoosiers,” Waterman said. “This sales tax exemption is a small step legislators can take to help the situation.”

  • Porpane sales tax
Does this sales tax cut apply to all of the state of Indiana vendors who sale propane? I got propane but they charged me the sales tax ? Said they had not heard of this amendment? Please let me know I paid $3.80 a gallon and that's a big hit . Only 250 gallons over $1000.00. Thank you for your help

Why not similar tax relief on gasoline? Electric bills? Gas bills? When gas goes up 29 cents per gallon, the sales tax adds an additional 2 cents per gallon, and that has an impact on many more people than the price of propane. Look back at your utility bills for the past 12 months and you will be amazed at what you paid in just sales tax...if the state legislature wants to help out the average taxpayer, that would be a good place to start.

  5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
